This report recounts a meeting between Charlie, Dr. Strauss, and Professor Nemur (the experiment's two lead scientists) at an office in the psychology department of Beekman University.  Dr. Strauss informs Charlie that he can't be sure how the experiment will affect Charlie.  Nevertheless, Charlie wants to take part because all his life he has wanted to be smarter.  Charlie mentions that he has no knowledge of the whereabouts of his immediate family.

Analysis

Charlie's lack of concern over Strauss' caution demonstrates his limited sense of self-awareness.  His lack of knowledge about his family, who turn out to live relatively close by, reveals how restricted or confined Charlie's world actually is.
