WHAT IS A URL?

The description of the location of an item (document, service, or resource) on the Internet and the means by which to access that item is known as the URL, or Uniform Resource Locator. The URL contains the protocol that will be used to access the item (for example, Hypertext Transfer Protocol, http://), the domain name of the computer that holds the item (for example, www.loc.gov), and the hierarchical description of the location on the computer where the file exists (for example, /foldername/filename.html). Each URL is a precise "address" that is connected to one specific resource.
