READ, GEORGE (1733–1798)George Read of Delaware was a signer of both the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE and the Constitution. A frequent speaker at the CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION OF 1787, he favored a consolidated national government and proposed abolition of state boundaries. He was a leader of the ratification movement in Delaware, and later he served as state chief justice and as a United States senator. DENNIS J. MAHONEY |
