"THE VIKINGS"
Early Ninth Century
Anonymous
Possibly written by a monk who had escaped the Viking onslaughts in Ireland, which began in about 800, this verse indicates that stormy weather means that the poet need not fear Vikings tonight.
Bitter and wild is the wind to-night
tossing the tresses of the sea to white.
On such a night as this I feel at ease:
fierce Northmen only course the quiet seas.
