MESOAMERICAMesoamerica is a geographic term for the area that extends from northern Mexico through Central America to the Isthmus of Panama. In prehistoric times this area was predominately settled by the Aztec and Maya Indians who built flourishing empires. Spanish explorers arrived on the coast of Mesoamerica in the early 1500s and eventually made their way inland, where they encountered the native peoples. The explorers conquered both the Aztec and the Maya by the mid-1500s. Mesoamerica was brought under the control of the Spanish crown and it formed a substantial portion of the viceroyalty of New Spain. The seat of colonial control was established at Mexico City.
