About the Book
Each entry in Extremist Groups: Information For Students contains the following six elements:
- Overview:
- Provides a brief overview of the subject of the entry.
- History:
- Provides the background and history of the group, including its origins and the individuals associated with the development and organization of the group.
- Philosophy and Tactics:
- Provides an overview of the philosophy of the group and how that philosophy is implemented by the group to bring about change.
- Other Perspectives:
- Provides an overview of reactions to the group by governments, individuals, or other groups.
- Summary:
- Provides a brief summary of the groups' leaders, governing philosophy, and actions.
- Sources:
- Provides a list of sources consulted or cited within the entry.
The first page of each entry includes quick "at a glance" information about the basics of the organization, such as its leaders, the year it was established, and the estimated size of the group. In addition, most entries feature sidebars with supplemental information, including short biographies of the group's leadership, key events in the history of the group, and primary source excerpts about the group and its activities. Photographs showing members of the group or the results of the group's activities are found in most entries.
When the only verifiable or attributable source of information for an entry comes from documents or information provided by a governmental organization (e.g., the U.S. Department of State), the editors endeavored to carefully note when the language used and perspective offered was that of a governmental organization.
