Big Two-Hearted River

Metaphor Analysis

Up/Down Movements: Whenever Nick stands and climbs, his spirits are likewise rising.  If he sits or descends, on the other hand, he's feeling badly about himself.  Thus, Hemingway made form to follow content.

"Good:"Hemingway mimics the biblical creation story to demonstrate the way in which Nick has created his own paradise of sorts on earth.

River: The big, two-hearted river, of course, symbolizes spiritual renewal for Nick Adams.  This relates, also, to the kingfisher idea mentioned in the theme review section.  Like his character, Hemingway himself found an escape from his suffering in his frequent trips to the wilderness of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
