Bridge to Terabithia : Chapter 11
Summary of Chapter Eleven: No!
Jess's dad tells him that they found Leslie's body in the creek. The rope broke as she was swinging across, and she hit her head on a rock and drowned. Jess keeps yelling no, he does not believe them. He runs out of the house and down the road. He runs because he thinks it will keep Leslie from being dead. Soon his father follows in the pickup truck. He jumps out and picks up Jess in his arms like a baby. He drives his son home, but the father cannot think of anything to say to his son. Jess throws himself on his bed. In the night, he replays the day as if Leslie had come to the museum, imagining a conversation with her. He decides he will go to the Burkes's in the morning to find Leslie.
In the morning, his mother serves him pancakes, a treat. His father milks the cow for him. His father puts his hand on Jess's shoulder in affection and tells him they will go to the Burkes' s house together to pay their respects.
Commentary on Chapter Eleven: No!
The author does a good job of portraying Jess's shock over Leslie's death. He does not believe she is dead. His mother and father for once are sensitive to his feelings and try to comfort him as best they can. The other children are insensitive to the grieving boy. Brenda criticizes Jess for being able to eat breakfast when his friend has died. May Belle wants to go to the Burkes to see the dead body because she has never seen one.
