Ilyich continues to ponder the cause of his sufferings, but finds no answers.  He remembers his childhood, realizing that these were his happiest days-days which grew progressively worse with age.  Again he asks himself if he has lived as he ought to have.  "Life," he says, "a series of increasing sufferings, flies further and further towards its end-the most terrible suffering."
