Volume 3, Chapter 4: While talking to Herbert, Pip decides that he is to abroad with Provis so that he is not hanged. However, before he leaves, Pip goes to visit Estella. When he reaches Richmond, he finds that Estella has gone back to Miss Havisham's, which is unusual, because normally he accompanies her when she returns. He arranges to go see her there, and when he arrives in town, he sees Bentley Drummle there. At first, the men ignore each other, but after a while they begin to bicker. Drummle baits Pip with the knowledge that he is doing dinner with Estella and has gone on many rides with her. As their battle of wills ends, Drummle rides off and Pip prepares to leave for Miss Havisham's.
Volume 3, Chapter 5: When he arrives Miss Havisham is surprised to see him, and asks him why he has come. He informs her of his knowledge of his true benefactor and tells her it was rude of her to let him believe it was her. Pip asks a favor of her then, and that is to be the anonymous benefactor of Herbert if something were to happen to him. He then professes his love to Estella, who tells him that she warned him against it, and that she is going to marry Drummle. Estella tells him that he will forget her soon, and he replies that she is all that is ever in her thoughts. Miss Havisham has a look of pity and remorse on her face at this, and he leaves. Not wanting to see Drummle, Pip travels back to London that night and when he returns and enters the gate, the watchmen hands him a note. He opens it there, and reads it. It is from Wemmick and tells him not to go home.
Volume 3, Chapter 6: Pip spends the night at a hotel, and early the next morning goes to visit Wemmick at his home. Wemmick without using names or sources tells Pip that his home is being watched and that Wemmick informed Herbert that they should take Provis to a safer place. He suggests to Herbert's fianc's house. Finally, he advises Pip to confiscate any of Provis's "portable property" that could be of use to him. Pip thanks him for the information and on Wemmick's advice, spends the day with the Aged, to throw the people watching him off his trail.
