Volume 3, Chapter 7: Herbert takes
Pip down to his fiancé's house. There he meet's Clara and hears her org of a father, Mr. Barnley.
He also meets the housekeeper Mrs. Wimple. After visiting downstairs, they go up to the apartments
where Mr. Provis stays, though they tell the others he is Mr. Campbell. Since Pip and Herbert
are such good "watermen", they decide to buy a boat and begin rowing regularly. In time, they
will pick up Campbell and row him somewhere safer. With this decided, Pip finds a boat and begins
rowing, sometimes alone and sometimes with Herbert. A few times they row past where Campbell is
staying and they practice the signal they know Campbell can see them on the water.
Volume 3, Chapter 8: Pip continues
his life as normally as possible, though he his creditors are more upset with him. Since Magwitch
showed up, he has not been able to touch the money in his possession. One evening, Pip decides
to go to a play that Mr. Wopsle is in. After the show is over, Wopsle tells Pip distressing news.
The man sitting behind Pip was one of the convicts in the marshes a long time previous. Pip is
nervous that Compeyson could have been so close to him. He and Herbert agree to be even more cautious
than before.
Volume 3, Chapter 9: Later that
week while walking, Pip runs into Mr. Jaggers who asks him to dinner with him and Wemmick. Wanting
to speak to Wemmick in hopes he can find out more information, Pip agrees and dines with him.
While at dinner Mr. Jaggers tells Pip of a note that Miss Havisham has sent to him requesting to see
him about the sponsorship of Herbert. Pip agrees that he will go see her immediately. While
eating, Pip looks at Mr. Jaggers housekeeper, Molly, very closely. He realizes that she has a
strong resemblance to Estella in her hands, eyes, and hair, and after the meal is over Pip is convinced
that the woman is Estella's mother. While walking home, Pip asks Wemmick for the story of the
woman, and Wemmick tells him that she was a client of Mr. Jaggers a long time ago who was acquitted,
and that it was said she had a girl child around three years old who disappeared, and who some thought
was murdered.
