Volume 3, Chapter 10: When Pip arrives at Miss Havisham's house, she is sitting in the room across the landing in front of the fire. They settle the business of Herbert, and she agrees to send Pip nine hundred pounds to invest in him for his partnership. Pip thanks Miss Havisham and she tells him that she is sorry about how Estella turned out and that she just wanted to save her from feeling the broken heart she felt. She asks Pip to forgive her and he does easily. Pip then asks her if Estella is married, and she says that she is. Curious of her involvement in Estella's adoption, he asks her where Estella came from. She said she asked Jaggers for a little girl to raise, and he brought her Estella. He left her then to wander around the garden and before he leaves he comes back to check on her. As he looks in her dress catches fire and Pip throws his overcoat and cloaks around her putting it out. Both were burned though Miss Havisham more severely. The surgeon agreed to write Estella in Paris and tell her what happened, and Pip says he will write Matthew Pocket as well. Later that night, Miss Havisham began talking in her sleep and repeating three phrases over and over again: "What have I done; when she first came here I meant to save her from misery like mine; take the pencil and write under my name, 'I forgive her.'"
Volume 3, Chapter 11: Herbert nurses Pip because his arms and hands were burnt so badly. While talking, Herbert tells him that Provis revealed to him the story of the woman he would not talk about earlier. As Herbert is telling him, Pip realizes the woman he is talking about is Estella's mother, and Mr. Jagger's housekeeper. When Herbert finishes the story, Pip tells him that Provis is Estella's father.
Volume 3, Chapter 12: Pip was not sure what to do with his knowledge of Estella's parentage, but he did go to see Mr. Jaggers the next day. When he arrives, he tells Jaggers of Miss Havisham's sponsorship of Herbert and the nine hundred pounds. He also told him that Miss Havisham had told him as much as she knew about Estella's parents. Pip then went on to tell him that he knew the whole of her parentage. Jaggers asks him who the knowledge would benefit if he told anyone, and they agree that it would benefit no one.
