  1. Haymitch Abernathy

    Haymitch Abernathyis District 12’s only other living victor. His experience in the Games was psychologically devastating, and now he is a “paunchy, middle-aged man” who is rarely seen sober. Yet he also successfully mentors, and comes to care for, Katniss and Peeta.

  2. Atala

    Atalais head trainer for the tributes—a “tall, athletic woman.”

  3. Avox

    The red-haired Avox who waits on Katniss while she lives in the Training Center is a young woman who, with a young man, had escaped the Capitol but was captured and punished by having her tongue cut out.

  4. Cato and Clove

    Cato and Clove are the Career Tributes from District 2.

  5. Cinna

    Cinnais Katniss’s stylist when she is in the Capitol. Unlike most denizens of the Capitol, he dresses modestly and speaks normally. And his plan to make Katniss, for whom he comes to care, and Peeta stand out among the tributes is brilliant.

    Seneca Crane is the Head Gamemaker for the 74th Hunger Games.

  7. Caesar Flickerman

    Caesar Flickermanhas for years conducted the interviews for the Hunger Games. He seems not to age, and he works to make each tribute look his or her best in front of the audience.

    Cray is the grizzled Head Peacekeeper in District 12; he also runs a liquor stall in the Hob and is rarely entirely sober.

  9. Darius

    Darius is a young, funny, red-headed Peacekeeper in District 12.

  10. Foxface

    Foxface is the name Katniss gives to the red-haired female tribute from District 5.

    Greasy Saehas a stall in the Hob where she sells soup.

  12. Katniss Everdeen

    Katniss Everdeen is the first-person narrator of The Hunger Games.A serious young woman with “Dark straight hair, olive skin, and gray eyes,” as she describes herself, Katniss carries great responsibility for such a young woman and lives in constant fear.

  13. Primrose Everdeen

    Primrose Everdeen is Katniss’s younger sister. Katniss’s nickname for Prim is “little duck,” and protecting her is Katniss’s driving motivation.

  14. Mrs. Everdeen

    Mrs. Everdeen is Katniss’s and Prim’s mother. Her first name is not given in the novel. Her knowledge of herbs makes her the closest thing the Seam has to a healer.

  15. The Gamemakers

    The Gamemakersare the Capitol citizens who script each year’s Hunger Games, create the arena, assess the tributes, and arrange events to keep the games lively. They receive a great deal of respect in the Capitol—unless their Games fail to please the audience or President Snow.

  16. Gale Hawthorne

    Gale Hawthorne is Katniss’s closest friend, her confidante and hunting partner, and possibly the man she loves. He certainly loves her. Gale, whose nicknames for Katniss is Catnip, works in the coal mines and helps his mother support his younger siblings.

  17. Hazelle Hawthorne

    Hazelle Hawthorneis Gale’s mother. Widowed by the mining accident that killed Katniss’s father, Hazelle works tirelessly and endlessly to provide for her children. Katniss admires her. Gale’s younger siblings are Rory (age twelve), Vick (age ten), and Posy (age four). Gale works hard to support them so that they will never have to buy tesserae and be entered in the lottery more than once.

  18. PeetaMellark

    PeetaMellarkis District 12’s male tribute in the Hunger Games. A baker’s son, generous and clever, he loves Katniss.

  19. Portia

    Portia is Peeta’s stylist when he is in the Capitol. Readers learn less about her than about Cinna, but they are partners in their plan to ensure that no one in the audience forgets Katniss and Peeta.

  20. Rooba

    Roobais District 12’s butcher, a wry woman who is sympathetic to Katniss and Gale because they bring her good game.

  21. Rue

    Rue is a twelve-year-old girl from District 11. With dark skin and eyes, intelligent and kind, Rue excels at moving through the tree-tops but not at killing. She becomes Katniss’s ally in the arena.

  22. President Snow

    President Snow leads the government in the Capitol and rules Panem. Slightish, gray, and impeccably dressed, he is never without a white rose and, Katniss thinks, the aroma of blood.

  23. Claudius Templesmith

    Claudius Templesmithis the “legendary announcer” of the Hunger Games. His is the voice tributes hear in the arena, making announcements when necessary.

  24. Thresh

    Thresh is the male tribute from District 11—strong and large, he is loyal to Rue.

  25. Effie Trinket

    Effie Trinket is District 12’s reluctant escort and liaison to the Capitol. Obsessed with social standing, fashion, and proper behavior, she nevertheless becomes attached to her charges.

  26. Madge Undersee

    Madge Undersee is the mayor’s daughter, Katniss’s age and a friend, though Katniss isn’t aware of it yet. She gives Katniss an expensive gold mockingjay pin as her district token.

  27. Mayor Undersee

    Mayor Underseeis mayor of District 12 and fares better than most residents, financially.

  28. Venia, Octavia, and Flavius

    Venia, Octavia, and Flaviusare Katniss’s prep team. Capitol citizens, they speak in high-pitched voices, have brightly dyed hair and garish make-up, and come to adore Katniss.
