At the house of Armando, the Spanish lord is telling his pageboy, Mote, of his love for a beggar woman.� The boy, who is extremely intelligent, tells him what her complexion says about her, but Armando cannot be dissuaded.� Behind his back, the boy makes jabs at his lovesick master, but to his face appears to obey him completely.� The constable enters with Costard and the woman he was found with, Jaquenetta, is there as well.� Constard is released into Armando's custody for punishment, and Armando professes his love for the girl even though she is a peasant.� She doesn't believe him, but he promises to visit her despite the fact she is a dairymaid.�
