Elbow brings Pompey to jail
for using a prostitute. Lucas enters and Pompey asks him to pay his bail. Pompey is disappointed,
and Lucio asks the Friar why the Duke has gone. He then slanders the Duke for leaving, but the Friar
warns him against doing so saying that the Duke will here about it. Escalus and the Bawd enter because
the Bawd has been arrested. She pleads for herself, but then says that Lucio, who was accusing her,
has fathered an ill legitimate child as well. The men discuss how Angelo cannot be swayed and Claudio
is scheduled to die the next day. The Friar tells Escalus that Claudio is prepared for death, and Escalus
decides to visit the prisoner.
