Act 5, Scene 1

The Duke returns and Angelo, Escalus, Varrius, and many others are there to great him.  He congratulates Angelo on his running of the city in his absence and together they all go off towards the palace.  Isabella comes forwards and tells the tail of what has happened between her and Angelo.  The Duke pretends not to believe her and has an officer take her to prison.  He asks who told her to come forward and she says Friar Lodowick. The Duke then asks if anyone knows of the man, and Lucio relates many negative comments about him.  Friar Peter steps forward, and disputes the comments made against the other holy man.  The Duke decides to have Angelo be the judge in his own trial and they sit.   Mariana comes forward wearing a veil and explains that Angelo is her husband, though he does not realize it was she he slept with.  Angelo calls for justice, and the Duke sends men out to find the missing Friar.  The Duke then has Escalus take his place, and he leaves.  Escalus then leaves to further question Isabella at the behest of Lucio.  The Duke enters dressed as the Friar with Isabella.  He argues with Lucio about which one of them said slanderous comments towards the Duke.  Angelo sends the Duke to prison and while he is struggling, Lucio pulls off his hood and reveals his true identity.  He commands that Angelo marries Mariana immediately, and they exit to do so.  They return and Marianna begs for her husband's life and persuades Isabella to do so as well even though he killed her brother. The Duke sends for Barnadine and Claudio in disguise.  Claudio is revealed to Isabella.  He then talks to Lucio and asks why the man slanders him.  The Duke then sentences him to be married to a woman he's slept with, whipped, and then hanged.  He revokes Angelo sentence, tells Claudio to marry Juliet, and asks Isabella to marry him.  They all go to the palace to have their sentences and marriages carried out.
