The Prince of Arragon makes his choice in the lottery, choosing the silver with the inscription, "Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves. (II.ix.36)." What he deserves is a loss and he is sent away with nothing. A messenger enters to announce that a Venetian has arrived who is to be praised for his riches and manner.
