| Act 3, Scene 1 |
Hero asks her maid Margaret to summon
Beatrice to the garden. Hero is planning to do her fair share of matchmaking now that Benedick
has been fooled. With her gentlewoman Ursula, Hero talks about Benedick's undying love for Beatrice.
Beatrice overhears the conversation and stealthily follows the pair to hear more. Hero bemoans
Beatrice's sour and spiteful nature for injuring a good man like Benedick. Both lady and servant
praise Benedick endlessly, cursing Beatrice for being blind to his love. They leave and Beatrice
is left bewildered and contrite. She decides to renounce her life as a bachelor for Benedick's
sake.
