The watchmen Dogberry and Verges are in prison, trying to coerce written confessions of their crimes from Borachio and Conrade. A second watchman states that Conrade receive 1,000 ducats for wrongfully accusing Hero. A sexton informs the group that Don John has fled the country and that Hero is dead. Dogberry and Verges lead the prisoners away for further questioning.
