Petruchio arrives in Padua with his servant Grumio.  He runs into his friend Horentio who tells him about Baptista's daughters.  Petruchio, because he wants her dowry, decides that he will woo Katherine, though they warn him that she is cursed.  He decides to woo her anyway.  In return for the chance to woo Katherine, Petruchio agrees to present Hortensio to Baptista as a music teacher for Bianca named Litio.  Gremio arrives with Lucentio (in disguise as Cambio) and says that he will also be a tutor to Bianca.  Gremio is excited to hear that Petruchio will be wooing Katherine, because he too wants Bianca.  Tranio arrives (in disguise as Lucentio) and declares his intention to woo Bianca as well.  All of the men decide that before any of them can have Bianca, they need to help Petruchio get Katherine.
