Katherine and Bianca are fighting, and
Katherine begins beating her sister. Baptista enters and stops the abuse. Bianca leaves, and Katherine
argues with her father about his decision to marry her off. Katherine leaves and Petruchio enters
bringing Hortensio with him who is disguised as Litio (the music teacher). Petruchio introduces
himself and Litio, and Baptista is very pleased though he warns Petruchio about Katherine. They discuss
her dowry and what happens if Petruchio should die. Gremio also arrives and brings with him Lucentio
in disguise as Cambio (a teacher of languages). Litio is intended to teach music to Katherine,
and Cambio is to teach languages to Bianca. The teachers go to their pupils while Petruchio talks
to Baptista. Soon, Litio returns however, because Katherine broke the lute over his head.
Baptista reassigns him to tutor Bianca, and he is secretly very pleased. Petruchio leaves to seek
out Katherine. They meet and fight verbally. Petruchio is confident however that she will
marry him, and does not give up his suit once he meets her. He talks again to Baptista whom he
tells that he and Katherine are in love, though they agreed to dislike each other in public. They
plan a date for the wedding, and the other suitors; Gremio and now Tranio (disguised as Lucentio) tell
Baptista all they can offer his daughter. Tranio wins, and his given Bianca's hand if he can verify
that he can give the promised dowry. He leaves to seek out someone to play Vincentio who will
give the guarantee to Baptista.
