Summary
Esmeralda sobs as she crawls back to her place in the courtroom. She begs the court to be quick. The Maitre Jacques Charmolue, the King's Attorney, reads in Latin from a long scroll the crimes to which the accused has confessed. Mid-way through his oration he is vexed to see that the goat is mimicking him. The defense attorney asks that the girl be fined for her crimes but the judges determine that Esemeralda is to perform penance in front of Notre Dame and then be marched to the Place de Greve where she and her goat will be hanged until dead. Esmeralda feels as though she is trapped in a terrible dream.
