Mansfield Park: Biography: Jane Austen

Jane Austen was born in Steventon in Hampshire, England in 1775. Her father was the Reverend George Austen and her mother was Cassandra Austen née Leigh. Austen was one of seven children, including her only sister Cassandra. She studied at boarding school at Oxford, Southampton and Reading for a period of just a few years.

 
Her major novels include Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1816). Pride and Prejudice was originally entitled First Impressions and was revised after initial rejection. Her work was popular in her lifetime and the prince regent and Sir Walter Scott were among her fans.
 
She died in 1817 of Addison’s disease and was buried in Winchester Cathedral. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published in 1818.
